Accomplishments

  • 1998-Christel DeHaan visits two Mexico City orphanages and develops the Christel House model
  • 1998-First Christel House opens in September providing supplemental education to children attending public schools
  • 1999-First Christel House volunteer trip with 137 volunteers providing medical services, cultural exchange and educational activities
  • 1999-St. Vincent Hospital's medical staff in Indianapolis repair student Maribel's cleft palate and facial scars from childhood abuse
  • 2000-Seven students attend International Peace Camp at Forest Glen Elementary School in Indianapolis
  • 2002-Indianapolis Mayor, Bart Peterson, and a group of Indianapolis firefighters visit learning center
  • 2004-Conversion to a full-day, fully accredited school
  • 2005-Christel House students illustrate poems written by blind students, and a book of their collaborative work is published
  • 2006-Students Estephany and Tannia attend the Culver Summer Leadership Camp in Culver, Indiana on full scholarships
  • 2007-Christel House Mexico ranks in top 10% of all public schools in Mexico, based on results of ENLACE, Mexico's national standardized test
